Belly Dance: a living dance tradition

Belly dance is a rich and expressive dance form with a centuries-long history. The dance is rooted in dance and music traditions from Egypt, Turkey, Lebanon, North Africa, West Asia, and surrounding areas, among others, and is danced all over the world today.

Throughout the centuries, Belly Dance has been shaped by melody, rhythm, social dance, stages, theater, film, and encounters between different cultures. As a result, the dance has grown into a living tradition with many styles, influences, and forms of expression, such as Egyptian raqs sharqi and baladi, Turkish Oryantal, Lebanese and North African influences, and modern fusion styles. Each style has its own atmosphere, musicality, and character, yet they share a kinship in movement language, connection with the music, and attention to nuance. Sometimes the dance was banned or misunderstood, but it always persisted: passed down from generation to generation, at parties, in families, and in the arts.

The name Belly Dance comes from the French *danse du ventre*, literally: dance of the belly. This name originated in the 19th century, at a time when European travelers, artists, and visitors to world exhibitions became fascinated by the dance. In English-language media, *danse du ventre* was translated as *belly dance*, although terms such as “stomach dance” and “abdominal dance” also appeared. The dance was often viewed through an Orientalist lens: exotic and erotic. However, Belly Dance is so much more than that external view. It is a dance form full of body awareness, musicality, and expression, in which not only the belly but the entire body dances along.

Belly Dance is both a social tradition and a performing art. It has been danced for generations at parties and gatherings, as a celebration of life and a way to experience fun and togetherness. At the same time, it is a dance form that can be deepened and refined into an art form: through technique, choreography, musicality, and presentation.

At Body Joy Studio, we consciously choose to use the name Belly Dance and to give it deeper meaning, allowing the belly to be experienced in a new way. Many people have learned to judge, tighten or hide this part of the body. Belly Dance invites you to experience the belly again as a centre of movement, strength, creation and life energy. Not from an imposed outside gaze, but from within.

Belly Dance celebrates your body as it is, and makes you part of a warm, living tradition that still touches, connects, and gets people moving worldwide.
